In this exhibition, ⧖ is presented as the symbol of the White Hourglass, a mark designed by combining the letters S and Z.

“⧖” denotes an attitude that seeks to open alternative possibilities in response to the rigidity of thought that arises when intuitive and experiential directions—such as horizontal and vertical—become fixed as an order of existence and perception. It signifies a mode of thinking characterized by a diagonal direction, forming a diagonal line between the two.
The exhibition venue itself, structured around a staircase, guides the body neither horizontally nor vertically, but through the space that lies between them.

At the same time, ⧖ encompasses the paired notations S and Z, which indicate the direction of yarn twist, as well as the contrast between voiceless and voiced sounds—sounds produced by breath alone and those accompanied by vocal cord vibration. Just as a single thread acquires its strength only through opposing twists, form emerges when two opposing forces meet at a single point.
The upper triangle of ⧖ converges from expansion into a single point, while the lower triangle unfolds outward again from that same point. That center—namely, the infinitesimal point at which the upper and lower triangles intersect—marks a liminal threshold where the forces that give rise to form are held in equilibrium, where breath and vibration become indistinguishable, and where time and space have yet to diverge.

In this exhibition, MuSuHi visualizes the binary patterns embedded within natural forms, returning them to the continuity of life and the spiral movement of interconnection. Aiko Yuno creates houses from the ordinary, seemingly insignificant words scattered throughout daily life, filling space with intimacy and moments of emotional uplift. Through vertically ascending structures that evoke water, together with functional sculptures, Asako Fujikura interweaves the circulation of urban infrastructure, notions of sanctuary, and the image of the cypress. Mon Koutaro Ooyama approaches drawing as a ritual gesture toward the mandala, simultaneously descending into the unconscious while fostering life-affirming germination.
The exhibition features new installation works by these four artists.

Born 1979. Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts. Lives in
Nara Prefecture. Works in Japan and abroad across murals, live painting, installation and canvas work, as well as planning, supervising and directing art projects. In 2014 he planned and supervised
#BCTION, an art project housed in a building slated for demolition, which he continues to run today as a fluid art collective.
He has presented several bodies of work, including NEXTEFX, a 360° mural on the themes of time, space and light; ANIMA, in which he probes his own interior on the theme of the relation between the conscious and the unconscious, drawing patterns that might be called a primal roar; and OTHERS, an illustration series on the theme of others with whom communication cannot be reached.

  • Mon Koutaro Ooyama (#BCTION, DOPPEL)

  • MuSuHi (Akiyoshi Mishima + Harumitsu Takaoka)

MuSuHi work with hemp as it has been used since ancient times, drawing on the yin-yang correspon-dence between musuhi (産霊), the spiritual working by which all things come into being and fall into order, and musubi (結び), the binding that harmonizes and gives rise to relation. Through it they spin the fraying that arises in the present, weaving the continuity of life back into our age.

Akiyoshi Mishima— Born 1978. Joined Enlightenment as a graphic designer in 2001. He began working as an artist in 2006, exhibiting in Japan and abroad at venues including NANZUKA (Tokyo) and Nagel Draxle (Berlin / Cologne). In 2017 he relocated to Nara. Through projects such as MuSuHi, an art collective concerned with connecting things, and Nanigotoya Republic, sited beneath the elevated tracks of the Nankai Electric Railway, he takes his own position as a starting point — making visible the relationships between people, places, and cultures, and widening the perception of the world as a diagram of correlations.

2006年より作家活動を開始し、NANZUKA(東京)、Nagel Draxler(ベルリン/ケルン)など、国内外で展示を行う。
